Your influence as a teacher never ends.....from the day you decide you want to be a teacher, and you get trained and you step into your classroom...you are the reason why a child would want to come to school; why he or she would want to learn.
Many children come from well grounded homes; where the routine is child centric; where involved parents enjoy their children; where the home has an ambience of love, kindness and affection; where children can voice their thoughts, anxieties, fears and joys; and where activities are centred around the growing child. You will never have trouble with these children as they will be contented, happy and well adjusted.
So, who are the children who will challenge you in the classroom? What child will be the reason for you to further your research, be innovative, imaginative and creative? Which one of them will develop your powers of intuition? Who will be the inspiration behind your progress as a teacher?
Let’s meet some of them....
5 year old Annie has a mind of her own. She can argue when she wants to, she can be attentive if you are interesting. Imagine answering her questions:
- Why can’t I see the stars when I go to school?
- Why can’t I drink my rice?
- Why do I have to go to school?
- Why do I need to play with other children?
The questions can be endless. She is a thinking, imaginative, spontaneous child - you should be thrilled to have her in your class. If you don’t respond to her with affection and respect, she will end up unsure and difficult to deal with. But if you are intuitive, reasonable with your answers and communicate with respect and affection, you are going to be a role model she will want to emulate.
3 year old Lata is awaiting the arrival of her baby brother. Her Daddy’s darling girl and her Mommy’s little doll. In school she is distracted and anxious - she can’t put a finger on it. How are you going to occupy her? What kind of sensory experiences are you going to give her that will keep her happy. Visually - illustrations, picture cards, charts; for the auditory sense - stories, rhymes, music; for the tactile, olfactory and gustatory senses real objects and experiences!
YOU are an integral part in the life of children. They wait for Teacher’s Day to to give you hand made cards and lovely flowers. Because you fill their hearts and minds with memories that live forever; even though you only spend 3 hours in a day teaching them. The children who come into your life have been destined to do so...Put your faith and trust in their well being...besides the Annie’s and Lata’s there will be so many little ones who will pass through your capable hands.
